What do you see as problems in the playground ?

The playgrounds nowadays are all not suited for children with certain disabillities as it might be too tiring or hard for them. Only normal and capable children are able to play in them. Children in wheelchairs would find themselves unable to play with anything as there is always a stairs to go up onto the playground. And not being to play anything in a ' playground ' it wouldn't mean anything and they might as well not go to the playgrounds anymore. We should build playground that cater to the needs of some disabled children with memory games and activities that are not so tiring and difficult. And instead of stairs in a playground a slide could be built.

How can we as citizens improve the playground ?

Volunteer groups of adults can be formed to help disabled children in the playground, such as carrying them onto the playground and explaining to them the games in the playground. We citizens can also write letters to the council to upgrade the playground to suit disabled children so they won't feel left out.

In what way can you make the playgrounds more appealing and accessible for the different target groups?

Firstly, the colour of the playgrounds. They are too dull and do not appeal to children, bright and radiant colours should be used. The slides could be painted with different colours giving it a spiral effect making it more interesting. Also some basic instruments and games can be put into the playground. The playground could also be put on the ground instead of being elevated, this has its disadvantages but it will be suitable for everyone allowing everyone to make friends. Playgrounds could also be nearer to HDB estates so it would be more convinient.

What do you see as problems in the playground?

The playgrounds now are more meant for normal children. It is considered dangerous for people with other abilities and it is not very convinent for them. Especially for disables children, they would not play most of the items in the playground like swing and slide. They would have difficulty playing without someone's help. The playground is also too physical intense for many special groups of children like children with down syndrome. They cannot play like the other kids. Though people with other abilities are one way or another different from the normal children. However they still want to have fun in the playground like everyone does. We should consider about them and care for thier needs.

How can we as concern people improve on the playgrounds?

We should improve on the safety of the playground. The playground can be lower, not so high up. The ladders or stairs can be replaced by gentle slope with railings so that the disabled children could push their way up slowly. Their could also be an alternative of a low height stairs. It could let the children with down syndome to learn to climb the stairs slowly. The slides could also have high railings that they could hold as it may reduce thier fear when sliding down. The playground could also have some simple and relaxing games for them to learn new things and interact with other children there.

In what way can you make the playgrounds more appealing and accessible for the different target groups?

The colours of the playground can be brighter as colours could brighten a children's day.The playground should not be built at one place where all the disabled childen are. They should be open to the world and make more new friends.

What do you see as problems in playgrounds?

Playgrounds nowadays are littered and vandalised by sad to say, students and most young people who spend most of their after school time there. The ladders and stairs also cannot be used by disabled children or weaker children. If the disabled children are in wheelchairs, the slides and swings will also not be used by them. These are usually the main things in the playground that without them, you might as well don't play in the playground.

How can we as citizens improve or solve these problems?

Citizens can form a volunteer group to help clean up and wash the playground.More creative citizens can come up with ergonomic playground designs or improvements for both normal and special children.

In what way can we make the playgrounds more accesible to disabled children?

The playground can be put on the ground instead of on an upper level. For thing that need height to work, like slides, ramps and railings can be put to aid the children with wheelchairs or who are weaker.slides can have higher walls and touch the ground at the end for children with wheelchairs so that they do not fall of the slide. For further precaution, grooves can be put into the slide for the wheels to fit into them. This adds more security for the wheelchair and all this can be fitted onto custom made slides which are wider and more flat.Normal chidren will be able to use the playgrounds too, allowing them to play with their disabled friends or family.A sitting area can also be put in for the parents or guardians of the children to sit while supervising their children and this whole playground can be sheltered to enable use in all weather.

Playgrounds around our neighbourhood are only meant for kid who are normal and have the physical ability to play it. Many of the children with disability wants to have a place to have fun . However, Playgrounds around or neighbourhood are usually not suitable for kids who are disable . Games in our normal playgrounds are very dangerous and tiring if people with diability were to play in it. ormal children can play in the playground. Some disabled children or children with difficulties cannot play in the playground because it is too tiring, difficult and also dangerous for them. When playing in normal playgrounds , kids with disability will get injured easily . We want them to have a place where they can have fun and also a safe playground to play in.

How can we as concern people improve on the playgrounds?

We can give suitable ideas which the goverment can take into conciderasion and probably the government will help people of disability to build a playground where they can have fun in . The playgrounds should be less difficult . Obstacles should not be tiring or dangerous. The playgrounds should acommodate to normal people and also people with disability. We as concern people can write a proposal to the council and hope that they will approve our suggestions.

In what way can you make the playgrounds more appealing and accessible for the different target groups?

The playground should be more colourful than the normal playgrounds. Colours should be attractive and not so dull . The playground should be interesting but not too tiring if people were to play in it. The playgroung should be near HDB estates so that people can go there more easily . This ensures that the people make use of the playgroungd to learn and to make friends. Therefore , people of all groups can share and use the playgrounds together.

What do you see as problems in the playground?

Only normal children can play in the playground. Some disabled children or children with difficulties cannot play in the playground because it is too tiring, difficult and also dangerous for them. An example is that the playground usually have stairs or ladders. Chldren who are physically weak or handicapped might not be able to climb the ladders or stairs and would not have fun playing in the playground. The playground is meant for all children to playneventhough they have difficulties or weakness. So, we me must improve on the playground.

How can we as concern people improve on the playgrounds?

We can improve the playground by making the obstacles easier for the disabled children. Obstacles should not be challenging and dangerous. The playground not should include ladders because it is tiring and difficult. Instead, we can include stairs with low steps. Memory games should be included to train their memory.

In what way can you make the playgrounds more appealing and accessible for the different target groups?

The colour of the playground should not be just one colour. It should include different types of attractive colours and not dull colours. Descriptive phrases can be written on the walls of the playground so that the children can learn from them. The playground should be open and free from gates or barriers so that children can access easily. Playgrounds should be built inthe middle of estates or blocks. With this, the children can make friends and enjoy new relationships. This helps to improve their confidence.

Done by ( Melvin Khoo ) :

2a) Explain how your reading of the novel had inspired the design of the playground in 100 words.

My reading of the novel had inspired the design of the playground to a great extent. In the novel, the playground was a place where Jesse and Leslie could seek peace in and can feel relax and comfortable in there .We wanted to let these children who are suffering from Down Syndrome feel that they are like us and can do what we can do . Our playground is a place where they can get away from how others looks at them and they won't feel so demoralized and sad in this place as everyone is just like who they are. Therefore, they will feel happy in the playground and will want to come back as often as possible. Many of our games or parts of the playground are steep and challeging. This let them feel satisfied of their result and will make them happy . The main part of the playground is the treehouse . The idea is gotten from the tree house in Terabithia . We want to create a treehouse that allows kids to feel accepted and happy . We also have a forest-like theme as we want to create a open environment that allows kids to play happily .

2b) Write a 100-word explanation as to why you had chosen the specific recycled materials for your model.

We used a cardboard as the base for our model as it is light and it is able to withstand heavy loads of our playground . We used coloured paper for decorating the floring as the actual flooring of the playground is made of PVC . And PVC is the only type of material that is safe to play on and can be coloured . The grasses and plants in the model are made using colour paper . The Main materials used in the playground is cardboards . We choose card bord as it is light and easy to work with . Milk bottles are used to make the tree house as it has a shape of a house . Strings and toothpicks are other small materials that are used as connecters .Almost all of our materials are recycled materials and are biodegradeble. We use $0 out of our budget of $5 as we did not buy any materials but only use materials that are found by our group members .
